Heinz-Werner Nienstedt studied engineering and economics, was assistant professor for econometrics and received his PhD at TU Berlin. At Bertelsmann AG (1984 – 1988) he started in corporate planning and controlling and became CEO of one of its first digital companies. From 1988 – 1991 he was head of strategic planning at Verlagsgruppe Georg von Holtzbrinck. After that until 2002 he became managing director of Verlagsgruppe Handelsblatt, the business and finance media group, first as spokesman and CFO, then as CEO and also member of the management board of the von Holtzbrinck Group. He served on various national and international boards of media companies among them The Wall Street Journal Europe, Brussels, Groupe Expansion, Paris, Economia, Prague and n-tv, Berlin.
From 2002 until 2015 he was full professor for media management and media economics at the Johannes- Gutenberg University, Mainz. During this time he also advised media companies and investors. For five years he served on the media advisory board and was consultant to Apax. In partnership of 2hm, Mainz, the management consulting firm, he led numerous projects in the field of marketing in the media industry. Currently he is mentor to startups and develops his portfolio of angel investments. Since 1990 he is chairman of Nienstedt GmbH, his family owned company in the field of technology for frozen food processing.
